Stupid Shin Splints.....

Shin splints suck! I have been so good at running lately and I have actually been enjoying it more and more the more I do it! I found myself actually looking forward to running which has never really happened before! Then 6 weeks ago, the inside of my calves started hurting and haven't stopped since! They would only hurt when I ran. I could walk, do the bike or elliptical for miles, play volleyball, and just about anything else and be just fine, but the impact of running just killed me(the actual impact of my foot hitting the ground)! I finally went to a podiatrist 2 weeks ago found out that I have shin splints due to not enough arch support. So, as a consequence, I have had to cut my running way back since I couldn't even run for a minute or two without almost being in tears because it hurt so bad. My problem is that I haven't been willing to completely stop running until they get better because I am actually liking running and my body is craving the exercise, so I have just cut back to only running like twice a week or so...and even when I do, it isn't much because I don't want to over do it. Last week I ran a mile and was feeling great while I was running, but decided I would stop running at a mile and just walk since that was the longest I had run since my legs started hurting and I didn't want to over do it. It felt great while I was running and so I thought I was doing really good and was maybe almost recovered....until later that day. The aching started again, but I was fine the day after and so I again thought I was doing good! Then Thursday night , I had a volleyball game (I play in a competition league down at the Rec Center) and then we had stake women's basketball afterwards. I have gone the last couple of weeks, but haven't played due to the fact that running kills me, but we only had 4 people there and I figured I would play but just take it easy. I felt great afterwards....until I woke up Friday morning. My legs have been aching so bad since..to the point I could barely even walk on Friday. WHEN WILL THEY GET BETTER!!!! Apparently I need to learn patience! But until they get all the way better, I guess my "cut backs" will just have to do! I just can't wait til I can get back to running when I feel like running...to really push myself, and not having to stop just because my legs are killing me.

How long have you had your shoes? It might be your shoes. There is a store up in Kaysville called Striders that will do various tests on your feet to see exactly what kind of shoes and support you need. I went there, found the shoes I wanted and actually found them cheaper online. I was getting shin splints last summer and then I bought a new pair of shoes and it went away. They say a pair of shoes needs to be retired after 300 or 400 miles. That would mean I should technically by shoes every 3 or 4 months. Like that's gonna happen.

Oh Kim...the easy remedy to this problem is to stop running and exercising. That's my vote. :) j/k

Way to go on all the running. That is so awesome. You've almost got me inspired. Which, I could use some help with that. I sure hope your shin splints do go away soon. Maybe you should run down to my house?
